The newly opened exhibition Borderland addresses the landscape of Skåne and how it has been represented in art.
The exhibition is divided between Malmö Art Museum and Ystad Art Museum and is primarily based on the museums' collections of landscape paintings of Skåne from the period 1850–1950, but also presents newly created artworks for the exhibition. This was a period when modernization took off and the countryside was often used as a projection surface for the unchanging and secure in uncertain times. However, some landscapes were considered not "Swedish" enough to fit in. A strong local identity therefore emerged in Skåne.
In parallel with Borderland, the permanent exhibition The Collection is also displayed, showcasing a cross-section of art history up to the 21st century. In The Collection, we can trace how painting, graphics, sculpture, crafts, furniture, and textiles change over time and with their surroundings.
