POP-UP exhibition: The Venus Mirror at Thorvaldsens Museum22 May - 26 May 2024

In connection with the focus exhibition 'GENSKIN', a series of sculpture mirrors by contemporary artist Line Poulsen will be installed in the museum's monumental entrance hall.
Line Poulsen works playfully and curiously with how the mirror can be a portal, a toy or a being in itself. In her imagination, the mirror is both a magical shield, a talk-to-the-hand mirror and a deep source of self-reflection. We can flirt with, mourn, hate, and love what we see in the mirror. We can also be indifferent, amazed or mesmerized.
The sculpture series draws on the Venus Mirror project from 2018, a small clam-shaped mirror molded from an impression of a real clam shell and created with the purpose of looking at your abdomen and getting to know yourself and your body without shame. In close collaboration with illustrator Anna Degnbol, Line Poulsen has tried to create a portal to a world where it is safe to get to know yourself. And where you don't have to be ashamed of your gender, body or sexuality.
The titles of the sculptures question some of the labels and myth-like narratives you may encounter, especially as a woman or feminine person. Titles or labels that can be unwanted or problematic, where you can feel trapped in a narrative that is not your own.
This exhibition is the artist's first encounter with Thorvaldsen and his collection of antique mirrors from ancient Etruria. Take a look at Line Poulsen's mirrors after you have experienced the focus exhibition GENSKIN. Do you see any commonalities?
