Morten Søndergaard (b. 1964, Copenhagen) is a Danish artist and poet known for working across literary, visual, and sound-based media. He debuted as a writer in 1992 with the poetry collection Sahara i mine hænder and has since developed a multidisciplinary practice rooted in language, sensory experience, and the physical world.
Central to his work is an ongoing investigation into how language interacts with the body, science, and perception. His poetic and artistic expressions often meet where the abstract becomes tangible—where the structure of words and sentences takes on sculptural, auditory, or pharmaceutical form. A striking example is his Wordpharmacy, in which linguistic categories like verbs, nouns, and adjectives are reimagined as medicine boxes complete with poetic ‘dosage instructions.’
Another key approach in his work involves inscribing ordinary, everyday sentences into materials that evoke permanence—like stone—creating a tension between the fleeting nature of language and the weight of physical matter. This strategy brings attention to the overlooked poetry of the trivial and the temporal, while also subtly invoking existential themes.
Søndergaard’s practice bridges the sensuous and the intellectual, inviting audiences to experience poetry not only as text but as something spatial, physical, and deeply embedded in daily life.
