WILLIAM LUDWIG LUTGENS: I FEILL A BULL WITHIN MY BOSUM BEILL

William Ludwig Lutgens (b.1991) is a Belgian painter and sculptor who lives and works in Antwerp. He is honoured with a Laureate at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts, HISK (2017). He holds a Master of Research in Art (2015) and a Master in Graphic Design (2013) both from Sint. Lucas in Antwerp. He has presented solo exhibitions nationally and internationally and is represented in numerous private and public collections including; the Collection of the Flemish Government, Collection of The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art / S.M.A.K. Ghent, Collezione Taurisano, and Collectie De Bruin-Heijn.

The exhibition title refers to a line in the poem ‘A Late Regrate Of Leiring To Love’ by the Irish courtier and poet Alexander Montgomerie (1550-1598). The poem reflects on the pain experienced by unrequited love, which can drive one to madness. Lutgens describes how the poem inspired the exhibition: ‘I Feill A Byll Within My Bosum Beill is a line from the poem that refers to the poet’s sensation of a “boll” or boiling object in his chest, which he does not can remove or cure by any means. This line captures the intensity and physicality of the poet’s suffering, as well as the feeling of being trapped or imprisoned by one’s own emotions.
