In the exhibition FOR:EN:ING (the Danish word for an association with colon punctuation to play on the words ‘for one’) by Ana Pavlović and Vladimir Tomić, the artist duo presents a new, large-scale cinematic work that looks closely at the present and future of community life.
Over the course of a year, they have followed a wide range of associations or formal communities sharing interests – from arm wrestling and folk dancing to a Danish-Chinese community in Herlev. In a time marked with polarization and democratic challenges, the artists focus on associations as voluntary communities as places where we can continue to practice listening, taking responsibility and acting together – and perhaps find ways to belong to something bigger than ourselves.
The artwork is created as an extensive cinematic collage, shown on six screens in Gammelgaard’s large exhibition hall. Through staggered, poetic image sequences, the artwork conveys the many rhythms and differences of community life. The camera dwells on movements, pauses, glances and repetitions; on the spoken and the unspoken. The focus is not on explanations or representation, but on moods, relationships and the experiences that arise when people meet again and again.
The artwork nuances the notion that communities either open up or close in on themselves and instead points to communities as living and complex spaces where relationships are constantly negotiated.
