The exhibition explores the nuanced relationship between naturality and artificiality. Her work delves into humanity’s intricate (dis)connection with ecological relations, questioning the contrast between what we are made of and what we make. Her work examines both the differences and similarities between our natural environment and the artificial worlds that we humans construct.
Created over the past three years, Julia Karla’s approach to photography transcends mere image capture. While the act of photographing is the starting point, it is only during the process of manipulating the images that the underlying - often invisible - textures, pixels and noise come to the surface. Through this process of modification, the original photographs undergo a metamorphosis and become something new —a metaphor for how we, too, alter and shape our environment.
By directing her lens towards the atmosphere, Julia Karla’s work reflects on our treatment and perceived understanding of ‘nature’ as mediated through digital tools. In an era where an unending list of high-definition visuals such as UHD, 8K, and OLED dominate our representations of nature, Julia Karla’s collection offers an alternative approach: one that embraces the subtle, tactile qualities of our ecological reality.

Julia Karla (b. 1996) is a Danish artist based in Copenhagen and is currently pursuing an MFA at Malmö Art Academy, and holds a BFA from the art academy in Bergen.
