Under is a group exhibition with contributions from twenty artists curated by fourteen independent exhibition platforms from Denmark and a few from Sweden. The variety of contributions points to the great diversity in exhibition practices that we have witnessed in recent years. Various live formats such as performances, concerts, debates and talks are also part of the programme and help to underline the same will and desire to create a vibrant and community-seeking scene among the participating artists and platforms.
Wednesday, May 21st, 12:00-6:00 PM. The following events will take place during the day:
1:00-1:45 PM: Guided tour by curatorial team Fafaya Mogensen and Nikolaj Stobbe
3:00-3:45 PM: Reading by Aske Høier Olsen
4:00-5:00 PM: Panel discussion Local Legends between Jesper Elg gallerist and founder of Gallery V1, Susanne Ottesen gallerist and founder of Galleri Susanne Ottesen and the founders of the defunct exhibition venue 1% director of the New Carlsberg Foundation Michael Thouber and curator Jesper N. Jørgensen.
5:30-6:00 PM performance with Ville Laurinkoski
Panel discussion: Local Legends (4:00-5:00 PM)
In the panel discussion Local Legends, we have gathered the founders of three legendary exhibition spaces in Copenhagen: Galleri Susanne Ottesen, Udstillingsstedet 1% and V1 Gallery. Each in their own way, in their own decade,  have pushed the boundaries of what can be considered art, how it can be presented and, not least, how the audience can interact with art. Models that today might be considered commonplace and unproblematic, but at the time they emerged they challenged the status quo and reshaped the art scene forever.
As co-founder of V1 Gallery, Jesper Elg was one of the first to look at street art in the early 2000s and ask: Why is this not art? In the 1980s, Susanne Ottesen confronted the art world's rigid structures around legitimacy and asked: Who is allowed to show art and decide what art can be? Michael Thouber and Jesper N. Jørgensen, whose work at Udstillingsstedet 1% in the 1990s was not only about exhibitions and events, but also about challenging conventions about the very spaces art could inhabit and the borders it could cross.
Years and countless exhibitions later, the movements that put these individuals in the spotlight have become so integral to the art world that their origins can often be obscured. In this panel discussion, through a historical outline presented by each location, we will learn together what motivated these Local Legends. And what advice do these people have for those who want to challenge the status quo in today's art scene?
The conversation will be moderated by Nikolaj Stobbe.
