This seminar is in Danish and invites an open conversation about what artistic research really is — and what it could be — in a Nordic and European context, and across different institutional settings. We will talk about what actually happens within artists' own practices when they embark on a PhD. How does it affect the art field when more and more artists pursue these advanced degrees in art? There’s also an interesting question embedded in the term itself: is "artistic research" a fitting expression, or might it be more appropriate to speak of practice-based, or artistic development work?
Moreover, since many artists are already working with research aesthetics and methodologies in their general practices, it’s worth asking what the advantage is of anchoring this work within higher education.
In the first part of the seminar, visual artists Julie Born Schwartz, Sidsel Christensen, and Marie Kølbæk Iversen will share their experiences from their PhD programmes at, respectively, Zurich University of the Arts, Switzerland; the Art Academy in Bergen, Norway; and the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and Aarhus University. The following conversation will be moderated by visual artist Louis André Jørgensen.
