Meet Camilla Berner for an exploratory conversation about the complex relationship between nature and culture, and how the dichotomy between the two may be neither useful nor true.
The talk will take its point of departure in Berner’s site-specific work You are yourself a sequoia, which explores the branching history of the giant sequoia—from the forests of California to Berner’s childhood garden on Funen, and now onward to Ordrupgaard’s historic park.
The giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is a coniferous tree that ranks among the oldest living organisms in the world and can be traced back to the time of the dinosaurs. These trees have outlived multiple civilizations and have stood as silent witnesses to the human lives that have unfolded beneath their canopies. Today, these natural monuments face a serious threat from climate change, drought, and increasingly severe wildfires. Using a multi-ton trunk from a fallen sequoia, Camilla Berner has created an interactive work in which you help revive the fallen giant when you step into the greenhouse at Ordrupgaard.
