In August 2021, the artist Ellis Achong Karker performed a marathon on the track of Østerbro Stadion covering a distance of 42.2 kilometers. For each lap, the artist repeated the word "Again" in front of a camera.
The marathon has since become a video work titled "Ups & Downs Around a Sun - Again," which is being shown for the first time in Achong Karker's solo exhibition at Skjold Contemporary, located within the confines of the changing rooms at Østerbro Stadion.
Around a Sun reflects on distance, childhood memories, and processes of grief.
In the exhibition's sound work, which envelops the space, we are torn away from the Earth and up to the sun and out into the universe to the Voyager satellite - the farthest human-made object from Earth. Here, we are allowed to linger for a while before being pulled back down to Earth - into ourselves and back to the memory of a lost childhood.
In the cyclical repetitive words "Again," "Again," "Again," repeated in the video work "Ups & Downs Around a Sun - Again," linear time dissolves, reminding us instead that we move from one state to another.
