Born in 1970 in Ankara, Banu Cennetoğlu’s artistic practice explores the political dimensions of different social and cultural hierarchies. She has exhibited at prestigious international venues, including documenta 14, the Istanbul Biennale, and represented Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009.
In BEING SAFE IS SCARY the works in the exhibition move from global and societal issues to the more intimate and personal realm. The striking work right? comprises four enormous bouquets made up of 1,190 golden balloon letters, that spell out four articles from the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Her new work 29.01.2025 is based on Danish news media and consists of every newspaper printed and published in Denmark on 29 January 2025.
Other works include critical mappings of the daily press, European migration flows and the UN Declaration of Human Rights which are juxtaposed with more introspective drawings and the artist's vast image archive to explore the overlaps between everyday life and global politics.
Here you will also get an insight into Cennetoğlu’s artistic process which often entails extensive collecting, cataloguing and archiving of material, manifesting in tightly composed works with far-reaching perspectives.
BEING SAFE IS SCARY is presented in collaboration with CPH:DOX and Human Rights Watch Denmark.
