The exhibition Desert is based on Reyman’s artist-in-residence stay in 2017 in the Atacama Desert in Chile—the driest place on Earth—and explores the desert as landscape, cosmology, and political space.
The Atacama is one of the world’s most mineral-rich regions and a central site for extensive extraction of copper and lithium, processes that have significant consequences for local ecosystems and the Indigenous Lickanantay community. These tensions between nature, resources, and the global economy form a central point of departure for the exhibition.
Reyman primarily works with abstract painting and natural pigments. The exhibition presents both large-scale diptychs and triptychs created with iron oxide pigments, as well as smaller silk works executed with copper-based gouache. The works draw on the distinctive geology and visual character of the Atacama Desert—its volcanoes, salt flats, and sinkholes—as well as its exceptionally clear atmosphere, which has made the region an important site for astronomical observatories.
As part of the exhibition, and in connection with the Art Matter festival, a series of public events will be held at Gloria cinema, including film screenings, talks, and concerts that address the desert as a cultural, artistic, and ecological landscape.
