The doll, with empty eyes, sits among stiff limbs that clatter unsettlingly, singing tragically and comically about life’s eternal stew. References weave through Hansel and Gretel, the film Cabaret, Little Red Riding Hood, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and even 30-year-old cocaine, blending Dadaist humor, tragedy, and pop-cultural aesthetics.
The bar transforms: nurses, fairy-tale figures, ghosts from the Thirty Years’ War, nationalist booksellers, and bureaucrats converge, and a child asks: “Mamma, what is inside my body?” – “Flesh and bones and blood and the whole wide world”.
Personal experiences echo universal themes. Handmade porcelain dolls, intricate ornamentation, and layered music create an ever-evolving stew of memories, dreams, and political realities. The work unfolds as an overflowing cabaret of weltschmerz, with extravagant costumes and dark as well as joyful moments.
