Born in 1992 in Moscow to Somali parents, raised in Växjö and living and working in Malmö, Moallim’s self-taught practice is shaped by her layered experience of place and belonging.
Drawing is the basis of Fatima Moallim’s performative practice, with the artist often incorporating installatory and sound elements. Born in Moscow to Somali parents and raised in Växjö, a small Swedish town until the age of 10, she lives and works in Malmö. Moallim gained notoriety with a 2018 work titled Flyktinglandet (Refugee Country), which she first performed at Marabouparken Konsthall and then later at Moderna Museet.
In 2025 she participated in 3 summers at Lunds Konsthall, where she exhibited a series of site-specific works created in dialogue with the site's architecture, activities and other participating artists’ works. In 2022, she joined the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) and was the 2022 Iaspis Studio Grant Holder at ISCP, New York.
Her work is part of public collections including the British Museum, Moderna Museet, Göteborgs konstmuseum, Ståhl Collection, Magasin III, and Statens konstråd. Alongside her show at the gallery, Moallim is participating in the British Museum’s current group show, Nordic Noir, with both a work on paper and a performance during the exhibition run.
