In the solo exhibition Jeg ønskede aldrig at såre nogen (“I Never Meant to Hurt Anyone”), Holtegaard takes his own position as transmasculine as a point of departure, engaging with historical research that traces how marginalised groups have repeatedly been made to bear responsibility for social conflict and collective fear.
Stories from a sacred space
At the centre of Nikolaj Kunsthal’s project space Platform stands a wooden column – one of several visible traces of St Nicholas’ Church, dating back to the 13th century. In “Jeg ønskede aldrig at såre nogen”, Holtegaard enters into dialogue with the building’s ecclesiastical past, foregrounding how the church has historically contributed to the exclusion and stigmatisation of those considered outside the norm. At the same time, the exhibition reflects on how norms shift over time, and how what was once rejected may later become the subject of inclusion.
Jeg ønskede aldrig at såre nogen is developed in collaboration with curator Sarah Pihl.
