I Vellas nye serie af malerier optræder en hovedkarakter, ofte kvindelig, som bevæger sig under en slags opmærksomhedens skær – skygger, der observerer uden at true, men med en sanselig, næsten flirtende tilstedeværelse.
Vellas malerier udspiller sig i et teatralsk rum, hvor narrativer og performativitet iscenesættes med stor detaljering og symbolsk tyngde. De kvindelige karakterer tildeles kompleksitet og agens, og relationen til deres omgivelser – til landskaberne, kroppene og materialerne – er central.
