Folded
Folds rather than cut and paste because of the cuts sharp finality. Folds that hide, obscure or disrupt the original. Folds seen as caring, as protection, or as a recipe. Folds that hide and distil and change the meaning of the original image. Folds that create other meanings. Folds that show what is left. Folds from Serra’s verb list to create sculptural interventions. Using ideas of appropriation, Benjamin’s writings on the value and the meaning of ubiquitous image reproduction on art ideas, and photomontage, these works are ridiculous and very, very serious. The making is ritualistic. The decision making is intentionally pared down, usually being one folded intervention. The making is intentionally pared down. It's mainly just one decision (fold) that alters (disrupts) the original reading (meaning) of the image. It means I can make them and document them anywhere - on the tube or in the car (not when driving) on the bus - I really like the way that they don't smack of elitism….. they are made out of ‘un-art', mundane, inexpensive materials. The making is laid bare. Edges are important in the decision making, lines that don't originally meet are made to link up. New juxtapositions are created. Visual information is lost (hidden), however, new meanings are created. The act of deleting certain information creates new information. Sometimes very small physical changes make profound alterations, some are humorous, others disquieting some are meant to pour scorn. Some ask a question or are just ‘there'.
Duplicates
Opportunistic street photography in Co Kerry and London. Like the separate frames on a super 8 film reel the chance folds and placements create strange drawn-out visual pauses that accentuate or obscure original meanings. Found sculpture, found collage/ photomontage. Chance. Repetition. Ritual.
