Rooted in a background of self-taught Chinese calligraphy and painting, Yufan’s artistic practice blends tradition with experimentation. His works often emerge through a collage- based process that reuses his own failed or abandoned pieces — fragments of brushwork, ink, and paper repurposed into something entirely new. What begins as disciplined mark- making transforms into visual puzzles, where careful assembly and spontaneous coincidence coexist.
Yufan’s practice is driven by an openness to surprise. Rather than planning the outcome, he focuses on the material qualities of line and texture, letting intuition and process guide the way. His collages often play with visual illusions, layering cut elements to produce depth, trick the eye, or interrupt a sense of order. This hands-on engagement — cutting, sorting, reassembling — becomes both meditative and playful, driven by a constant search for the unexpected.
In recent years, Yufan has expanded his material vocabulary, incorporating acrylic, plastic, and canvas into his work. While collage remains central, his exploration occasionally extends into installation, where sound, light, and technology open up new sensory dimensions. Across formats, Yufan’s work reflects a quiet tension between control and chance, tradition and transformation — always searching for moments of unexpected coincidence.
