Marijke van Warmerdam (born 1959, the Netherlands) first garnered international attention at the 1995 Venice Biennial with her short film loops which portray the beauty of fleeting moments, simple movements, and everyday actions. Her frame of reference is without guile: “Art can give life a twist, and the other way around.”
She makes use of image constructions – such as dramatic shifts of scale, doubling, reflection, rhythmic repetition, or surprising juxtapositions – which provide an open and unexpected perspective. In doing so, she draws attention to the beauty of trivialities and spontaneity with a refreshing playfulness. Alongside her short, looped films, the artist employs a variety of media including photography, sculpture, and sound.
